THE RELUCTANT FUNDAMENTALIST Arbeitsmaterialien zu Chapter 2 Vorschläge zur Romananalyse mit 2 Arbeitsblättern mit Lösungen zu Stilmitteln The Reluctant Fundamentalist by Mohsin Hamid Chapter 2 The Reluctant Fundamentalist by Mohsin Hamid Arbeitsgrundlage ist die Penguin Ausgabe von 2008 CHAPTER 2 Falling in love with AmERICA Question 1 Changez the alleged lover of America p.1 has returned to Pakistan leaving behind his love called Erica and America society he was once so happy to join. p.5 In Chapter 2 Changez alludes to his falling out with America. But it may be that I am inclined to exaggerate these irritants in retrospect knowing the course my relationship with your country would later take. p.24 Point out these irritants and explain reasons why falling in love with America was doomed from the beginning. Changez coming from a poor background holiday in Greece paid for by his sign on bonus therefore limited amount of money available his finite and depleting reserve of cash p.23 cooking his own meals in basement kitchen inferior but self reliant working to pay for his university education outsider well liked as an exotic acquaintance p.24 tolerated but not really accepted and his pleasure of being among this wealthy young fellowship p.23 reluctant to compete with his rivals the guitarist and Mike for Erica s favour annoyed by their lavishing money meals at 50 per person shocked at their self righteousness and lack of respect for older people his traditional sense of deference to one s seniors blames history for his inferior position superior position by accident not by merit the guitarist and Mike are straightforward not inhibited to flirt with Erica carefree lifestyle no financial problems self confident expect perfect service for their money whatever a person s age the Americans coming from a rich background holiday in Greece as a gift from parents or own personal wealth trust funds eating at prestigious club money provides superiority quirk of human history p.24 feels culturally superior objects to American dominance at the fortress in Rhodes facing the wall against the East he is on the wrong side joke dream of being the dictator of an Islamic republic with nuclear capability Pakistan possesses nuclearweapons seen by Changez as upstarts devoid of refinement conduct themselves as though they were ruling class they are on the right side of the wall against the East shocked at the joke only Erica sees any humour in the joke Changez love affair with America is doomed from the start. Superfically he might appear to be an integral part of this small American group. The need to protect his self respect makes it impossible for him to really join this group. he feels inferior limited financial means less self confidence he feels superior he earns the money he spends he feels culturally superior he objects to American dominance power by accident not by merit he is aware of his origin in the East he provokes by shocking comments Changez falling in love with Erica Describe the reasons for their mutual attraction. Changez loss home loss of home growing up in an extended family in a protected environment Erica loss of boyfriend growing up in nuclear family as an only child Chris her home best friend boyfriend co operating in creating comics not really feeling solid feeling solid p.22 COLLECTIVISM being alone a luxury to be enjoyed from afraid of being alone INDIVIDUALISM time to time EFFECT able to give space p.28 clinging to lost boyfriend Similar situations previous loss attract Changez and Erica to other. Erica appreciates Changez considerate behaviour and steadfastness. Changez does not only find Erica attractive he admires her strength Erica practices a martial art like tae kwon do her effect on other people her presence her magnetism p.24 . He compares her to a lioness among her pride. To convey an idea of her outward appearance he likens her more to Gwen Paltrow than to Britney Spears an allusion the Americana does not grasp. Yet Changez is mostly attracted to Erica s fragility at a degree of remove from those around her out of reach lost in thoughts unsaid pp.24 25 . Irresistibly refined or oddly anachronistic p.3 Translate these passages from very formal English into less formal English. Does Changez use of English make him appear irresistibly refined or oddly anachronistic Give reasons for your answer. Why does he use formal English in an informal situation very formal English It was immediately apparent that I would not have in my wooing of Erica the field to myself. I chose to maintain a magnanimous silence Chuck s good and similarly monosyllabically monikered friend Mike I drew consolation from the fact training her green eyes at me to the best of my knowledge I have never...had any fear of solitude I gave in to the pleasure of being among this wealthy young fellowship The ease with which they parted with money less formal English Obviously I was not the only one trying to flirt with Erica. I preferred to remain quiet Chucks good friend Mike whose name also consisted of one syllable only I was relieved because looking at me with her green eyes as far as I know I had never been afraid of being alone I finally enjoyed being with this group of rich young Americans they spent a lot of money without a single care the occasional but not altogether infrequent meal costing perhaps fifty dollar a head my finite and depleting reserve of cash At times rather often they paid fifty dollars per person for a meal I did not have that much money and I was spending it fast my tradition respect for older people I liked to watch her an important part of her appeal compared with female celebrities in your country I could find the words to.. I tried hard not to look foolish at last I managed to say when she was at rest I met I made friends with a woman I was extremely fond of I really loved my traditional sense of deference to one s elders observing her gave me enormous satisfaction a not insubstantial component of her appeal in relationship to the contemporary female icons of your country words had abandoned me my thoughts were engaged in a struggle to maintain a facial expression that would not appear idiotic claiming victory at last over my cowering tongue during moments of repose I had struck up an acquaintance with a woman with whom I was well and truly smitten Changez may want to impress his listener and try to appear irresistibly refined . So he uses formal English showing off his academic education his command of a large vocabulary and complex syntax. But this type of English register is used in more formal occasions such as speeches lectures or in written texts. Moreover his way of speaking reminds his listeners of dialogues in 18th or 19th century novels thus making him appear oddly anachronistic . His lengthy sentences and stilted expressions appear forced artificial pompous and pretentious sometimes resulting in a comic effect. It is like turning up in an evening gown at your workplace When he invites Erica for a drink her answer I would be delighted to do so sir. p.29 mocks his high flown speech. Changez use of English is completely inappropriate in the situational context he is chatting in English with a complete stranger at a tea shop in Lahore. Yet he might use this very formal English deliberately. The use of formal language in informal situations is often employed as a means to express irony. Thus depending on the linguistic context and the relationship between speaker and listener the deliberate use of the wrong register may alienate or even hurt people. Changez deliberate use of formal English in his chat with the American might serve to give his tale an ironic twist.
