Both in his private and his professional life Changez benefits from his foreignness. Changez private life I took advantage of the ethnic exception clause that is written into every code of etiquette p.55 Changez professional life I was aware of an advantage conferred upon my foreignness and I tried to utilize it as much as I could. p.47 Analyse the episode where he selects clothes for the dinner party and his private encounters in New York. Does he use his foreignness as a shield or does he create a barrier Is he really a New Yorker as he claims or still a Pakistani in New York EPISODE AIM Selecting clothes for dinner party with Erica s parents elegant but also casual PROBLEM his suit too formal his blazer too old shabby SOLUTION his kurta a loose shirt falling either just above or somewhere below the knees and jeans traditional and Western clothes Both in his professional life and his private life Changez takes advantage of his foreignness p.47 55 which serves to protect him from a head to head comparison with his American counterparts at the office or from criticism or ridicule in case he violates social norms. Selecting jeans and a kurta allows him to appear both casual Western and elegant traditional Pakistani. Thus he avoids the difficult choice between formal suit and shabby blazer. On the subway in multi ethnic and multicultural New York his traditional clothes do not attract attention but at the impressive building in the affluent neighbourhood where Erica lives Changez faces the doorman s disapproving welcome. Though Erica appreciates his traditional outfit Wow...you look great Changez still runs the risk of being regarded as an exotic acquaintance p.19 his role among the American students in Greece. All in all Changez foreignness serves as a protective shield which can easily turn into barrier. Later on after 9 11 his foreignness will make him a target. His worries about appropriate clothes are ridiculed when Erica opens the door wearing a Mighty Mouse T shirt and when Erica s father serves hamburgers at a tennis table on the roof terrace. So the kurta saved him from appearing completely overdressed at a barbecue. Changez interacting with New Yorkers outside the office passengers on the subway indifferent doorman Erica s mother Erica s father disapproving suspicious serving wine because Changez is 22 no wine because he is a Muslim comments on Pakistan its economic problems and fundamentalism Erica s friends in the chic heart of the city in an insider s world On the subway passengers are used to multi ethnic clothes the doorman s disapproval as Changez himself points out may be caused by the obvious socio economic disparity SIMILE arriving at a mansion in small and rusted car p.56 not ethnic prejudice. For Erica s mother he has become American so serving Changez wine is a problem of age consuming alcohol under the age of 21 is illegal in the US . Erica s father aware from personal experience with a former Pakistani employee tries to respect the rules of Changez Muslim faith. Discussing Pakistan s economic and social problems Erica s father himself a successful businessman has chosen a suitable topic with the future business analyst Changez. Though Changez concedes that Erica s father is well informed his was a summary with some knowledge p.63 he takes offence. He objects to the typically American undercurrent of condescension p.63 he allegedly detects. Erica introduces him to her friends the young and rich of New York . Admittedly Erica is his entry ticket into this chic heart of New York but Changez never feels rejected among Erica s friends though they might view him as Erica s exotic acquaintance not an equal. Though he stresses his Pakistani identity Changez does not acknowledge his socially inferior countryman the Pakistani taxi driver when he returns in a taxi with Erica after a party but he is on friendly terms with the Pakistani restaurant owner when he invites Wainright to taste traditional Pakistani food. New York welcomes Changez. Superficially he has become a New Yorker both as young professional and a private person. He does not face prejudice or exclusion in this multicultural city. But because of his lack of confidence revealed in his exaggerated formality his taking advantage of his foreignness his grudge against American superiority his pain at his home country s decline he remains a Pakistani in New York.
